Like so many Scots, past and present, I fancied my chances of starting a new life abroad. Like so many of my countrymen, I chose America as a place where anybody could become somebody. Even if they came from Dundee.

So I booked a holiday in New York and threw away my return ticket when I got there. I would live the American Dream. I would make it big using only my wits, charm and debonair good looks…
